The cost of maintaining many disparate systems is large, and the benefits of doing so will surely diminish over time. This book will demonstrate the fundamental concepts relating to EAI within the architecture of Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE). J2EE represents the primary distributed architecture model for creating business applications and is arguably the most mature and robust design for enterprise development. It offers technologies that enable the development of large and scalable applications. It also provides a layer of abstraction that can be applied on top of an enterprise system; promoting a standards-based approach to development. The J2EE architecture also promotes the creation of multitier applications, in which developers can break down the mammoth undertaking of enterprise-scale integration into specific, self-contained, tasks. Starting with an audit of the legacy systems that we may encounter, we’ll provide a comprehensive study of the choices and strategies available to us when we use the design principles and patterns associated with the J2EE architecture. After familiarizing ourselves with basic data-level integration, we’ll venture into situations in which we’ll need to get to grips with the business method level integration. From here, we’ll cover complex integration issues such as bridging between different technologies and transaction and security management in EAI systems.
