About the book
At a glance
Document Scope This guide describes the common hardware and software features of the
Advantys STB network interface modules(NIMs) and those that are specific to the
STB NIP 2212. The specific features enable an Advantys STB island to function as
a node on an ethernet local area network( LAN)and, in turn, the Internet, or,
indirectly, a wide area network ( WaN)
The Ethernet LAN on which an STB NIP 2212 island resides uses Transport Control
ProtocolInternet Protocol (TCP/P)as its transport layer. The Modbus protocol runs
over the TCP/P layer. This way, an ethernet host device can control an island with
Modbus commands. The Modbus protocol allows devices that can connect only to
the RS-232 port on other Advantys STB NIMs to connect to the STB NIP 2212's
fieldbus port, too
Note: This Guide uses the module name stb nip 22 12 to introduce a feature
specific to the ethernet nim
The following information about Advantys STB NIMs in general and the
STB NIP 2212 in particular appears in this Guide
ts role as the Advantys STB Ethernet gateway
the NIM's integrated power supply and its role in the distribution of logic power
across the island bus
common external interfaces:
the two-pin connector to an external SELv-rated power supply
RS-232 interface to optional devices, including the Advantys configuration
software and a human-machine interface(HMI)operator panel
the optional removable memory card
advanced configuration features, such as island fallback scenarios
STB NIP 2212 specific features, including its global connectivity capabilities
how to configure an STB NIP 2212 with IP parameters
how to connect the stb nip 2212 to an ethernet network
STB NIP 2212 web-based configuration and troubleshooting features
Simple Network Management Protocol (sNMP) device management services
