Abstract The image segmentation is a key technology for image processing, also is a classical, difficult problem for
researchers. No method which is fit for all segmentation problems has been found and no criterion for judging is
established since this research started. In this paper, an overview on image segmentation methods and some new
methods appeared recently are introduced respectively. Finally, The prospect of the image segmentation technology
is discussed. It is heuristic for those who are studying image processing
